The second step toward becoming a knight is the Squire level.
Historically, a Page made the transition to Squire at around 12 or 13 years of age. As a part of this change the duties that were required of him changed dramatically. As a Page, he worked within the household to serve the needs of the lord and lady of the house. As a Squire, the duties required of him were still duties of service but to the knights and warriors of the house. A squire would also begin his training in the martial combat skills that he would need as a future knight. The squires duties would also include the care and maintenance of some of his lords most valuable items, his armor and his horse.
A Squire would travel with his lord when he would go to battle or to tournament. In either case the squire served as a standard bearer for his lord. For the squire, this was a position of great honor. In ancient times the standard of a knight or king was the rally point for the soldiers that fought for that knight or lord. Every soldier advanced in battle as the standard did. This was not only a great honor for the standard bearer but a position of great risk. The enemy force also had a standard bearer and understood the importance of the role.

If the standard should fall or be captured it would be demoralizing to the force of men fighting for that noble. This made the job that the squire had to do the most important on the battlefield. To encourage the forces of his lord to advance upon the battlefield to win the conflict.
The theme of the Squire level of Men of Iron is to become a Standard Bearer for the King. It is our calling to carry the banner of the King of Kings with us as we sojourn through this world to spread the Gospel. For the believer there is no higher honor than to represent the Kingdom of Heaven in our daily lives and inspire other believers around us to find their courage and do the same.
